Michelle Grace Hunder – Photographer extraordinaire

The visionary Michelle Grace Hunder has recently documented the diversity and essence of Australian hip hop in her book Rise. With a natural talent for capturing personality in portrait, it is no surprise that she is taking the world by storm and snapping shots.

M-Phazes When did you know you wanted to be a photographer?
I didn’t really. I kinda fell into it by accident. My husband bought me a camera for Christmas to take on holidays, and I just started shooting here and there. Within a year I went professional.

Who are some of your favourite photographers, and how did they influence you?
I’m not really influenced by single photographers, more iconic images, generally from the early 90’s hip hop scene. Having said that, Jonathan Mannion has taken a lot of the photos I really love. So he would be right up there.

What is the strangest thing that has happened during a shoot?
I can’t think of anything overly odd that’s happened. That’s a really boring answer. hahahahah

What type of camera do you use?Thundamentals
I have two, Nikon D700 and a D800 which I’ve just started shooting with. I tend to keep going back to the D700 because I love them so much.

What 3 albums would you take with you to a deserted island?

  • Snoop Dogg – Doggy Style
  • Tupac – All Eyez on me (that’s cheating coz it’s a double album)
  • Kendrick Lamar – Good Kid Maad City
